MUMBAI, October 30, 2025. Few characters have ever captured the heart of India like Baahubali. When S.S. Rajamouli’s films arrived, they did not just break box office records. They gave India a new hero. But the story of Baahubali is not simple. It is a grand story of two men, a father and a son.
Character Spotlight: Journey of Baahubali
The evolution of this character is what makes the story so powerful. We look at how “Baahubali” changes from a free-spirited boy into a legendary king.

The Two Baahubalis
First, we must understand that there are two heroes. The title “Baahubali” belongs to both.
- Amarendra Baahubali: He is the father. He is the perfect man and a noble prince of Mahishmati.
- Mahendra Baahubali: He is the son. He is the hero we meet first, living as a tribal boy named Shivu.
The entire story is about the son, Mahendra, evolving to become as great as his father, Amarendra.
Part 1: The Boy Named Shivu
Our journey begins with Mahendra Baahubali. But he does not know his name. He is called Shivu. He is raised by a loving tribal family at the foot of a giant waterfall.
Shivu is strong, restless, and curious. He shows his superhuman strength when he lifts a giant Shivalinga. His only goal is to climb the massive waterfall. He does not know why. He just feels a calling.
His evolution starts because of a mask. He finds a mask that belongs to Avanthika, a warrior. He falls in love with her. He is impulsive and driven by this love. He takes up her mission: to rescue Princess Devasena from the evil King Bhallaladeva. At this point, Shivu is just a strong man fighting for a girl he likes. He has no idea about his past or his real destiny.

Part 2: The Truth and the Father
The big change happens in Mahishmati. Shivu rescues Devasena. He is then confronted by Kattappa, the loyal warrior. This is when the past is revealed. Kattappa sees Shivu and realizes he is Mahendra Baahubali, the son of the great Amarendra Baahubali.
This is where Shivu’s evolution truly begins. He is no longer just a tribal boy. He learns he is a prince and the rightful king.
The film then shows us his father, Amarendra Baahubali, in flashbacks. Amarendra is the ideal hero. He is humble, kind, and follows Dharma (righteousness). He loves his people more than the throne. He is a great warrior but also a good man. He treats everyone with respect. Amarendra is the legend his son must now live up to.

Part 3: The Son Becomes the King
After learning the truth, Mahendra Baahubali is a changed man. His purpose is no longer just love or adventure. It is now about justice.
He learns how his father was betrayed. He learns about the suffering of his mother, Devasena, for 25 years. His boyish nature is gone. He becomes a leader.
In the final battle, Mahendra is not just Shivu. He is not even just Amarendra’s son. He becomes the true Baahubali. He uses his father’s intelligence and strategy, not just his own brute strength. He unites the people and leads an army. He defeats Bhallaladeva and reclaims the throne.
The evolution is complete. Mahendra starts as Shivu, a boy with great strength. He ends as Mahendra Baahubali, a king with great character, just like his father.
