De De Pyaar De 2 Budget & Break-Even Analysis: Can It Survive?
De De Pyaar De 2 Break-even explained: Full analysis of budget, COP, P&A, distributor share and why the film needs ₹290 crore net to recover
New Delhi, 16 November 2025 – Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh’s latest film, De De Pyaar De 2, has finally hit the cinemas. The sequel was released on November 14, 2025. It is a much-awaited romantic comedy. The first film was a big hit in 2019. Now, all eyes are on the box office numbers of the second part.
The business of a film is not just about the opening day collection. The real test is the break-even point. This is the collection where the producers start making a profit. For a big-star film like this, the break-even figure is always very high.
We at BoxOfficeWala have put together a detailed analysis. We look at all the costs involved. We will calculate the total collection needed for De De Pyaar De 2 to be called a ‘Hit’ and make money for the makers.
De De Pyaar De 2 Total Cost: Production and P&A
To find the break-even point, we must first know the total cost of the film. This total cost has two main parts. They are the Cost of Production (COP) and the Print and Advertising (P&A) Cost.
Decoding the Production Cost (COP)
The production cost includes everything spent on making the movie. This covers actors’ fees, salaries for the director and crew, set construction, shooting expenses, music rights, and post-production work.
- Star Cast Fees: The lead actor, Ajay Devgn, has a big fee. According to an Asianet News report, Ajay Devgn charged a whopping Rs 40 crore for the film. Rakul Preet Singh reportedly took home Rs 4.5 crore. New cast members like R. Madhavan and Gautami Kapoor also charged significant amounts.
- Total Production Cost Estimate: The first De De Pyaar De film had a reported budget of Rs 78 crore. Since the sequel has a bigger star like R. Madhavan and general costs have increased, the production cost of De De Pyaar De 2 is estimated to be higher.
- Our Estimate: We estimate the Cost of Production (COP) for De De Pyaar De 2 to be around Rs 95 crore to Rs 105 crore. This is a reasonable number for a major Bollywood film with a superstar lead. Let’s use Rs 100 crore as a base figure for our calculation.
Print and Advertising (P&A) Expenses
The P&A cost is for promoting and distributing the film. This includes making the actual physical prints for theatres. It also covers all the money spent on advertising. Think of TV commercials, newspaper ads, online promotions, and trailer launches. For a big film, this cost is usually high.
- P&A Cost Estimate: Based on current industry trends, the P&A cost for a film of this size is typically about Rs 25 crore to Rs 35 crore.
- Our Estimate: We will take a middle figure of Rs 30 crore for the P&A cost.
Calculating De De Pyaar De 2 Total Budget
The total cost, or the final budget, is the sum of the Production Cost and the P&A Cost.
Total Budget=COP+P&A Cost
Total Budget=Rs 100 crore+Rs 30 crore
Total Budget=Rs 130 crore
So, the producers of De De Pyaar De 2 have spent an estimated Rs 130 crore to bring this film to the big screen.

De De Pyaar De 2 Break-Even Calculation: Profit Threshold
Producers do not get back the full amount that audiences pay at the ticket window. They only get a share of the Net Box Office Collection (NBOC). This share is called the Distributor Share (DS). The rest of the money goes to the cinema owners (exhibitors) and for taxes.
For a big film, the Distributor Share (DS) generally ranges from 40% to 50% of the NBOC. We will use a standard conservative average of 45% for a major star film in India.
The film’s total cost is Rs 130 crore. The film needs to recover this much money just to break even.
Break-Even Distributor Share=Total Budget=Rs 130 crore
Now, we must find the Net Box Office Collection (NBOC) needed to get a distributor share of Rs 130 crore at a 45% rate.
Required NBOC=Distributor Share Percentage Break-Even Distributor Share
Required NBOC=0.45 Rs 130 crore
Required NBOC≈Rs 288.89 crore
This means that for De De Pyaar De 2 to just break even—to recover all its costs—it needs to collect around Rs 290 crore (Net) at the Indian box office.
Ticket Price Assumptions and Footfall Needed
To understand how high this Rs 290 crore target is, let us look at the number of tickets that need to be sold. This is known as footfall.
Average Ticket Price (ATP) Assumption
Ticket prices vary wildly across India. They are higher in big cities (metros) and lower in smaller towns. They are also higher on weekends and lower on weekdays.
- Multiplex vs. Single Screen: Multiplex tickets can cost Rs 300 to Rs 500+. Single screens might be Rs 100 to Rs 150.
- Our ATP Estimate: Considering the mix of screens and the higher weekend rates, we can assume an average All-India Ticket Price (ATP) of around Rs 200 for the entire run of the film.
Calculating the Required Footfall
Required Footfall=Average Ticket Price (ATP)Required NBOC
Note: The NBOC is the net collection before the cinema owner’s share is taken out, while the ATP is the gross price. This calculation gives a rough idea but is very close for a big film.
Required Footfall=2002,90,00,00,000
Required Footfall=1,45,00,000 Tickets
De De Pyaar De 2 needs to sell approximately 1.45 crore tickets in India to recover its total investment.
Box Office Verdict and Profit Thresholds
In the box office world, a film is given a ‘Verdict’ based on its return to the distributor.
- Above Rs 290 crore (Net): The film officially enters the profit zone.
- Hit Verdict: To be called a proper ‘Hit’, the film must earn a profit of about 75% to 100% on its investment. This means the distributor’s profit must be around Rs 65 crore to Rs 100 crore after the break-even.
To achieve a ‘Hit’ status, the total NBOC needed would be:
Hit NBOC≈0.45Rs 130 crore×1.75≈Rs 505 crore
If De De Pyaar De 2 crosses Rs 500 crore (Net) in India, it will be a huge blockbuster.
Early Box Office vs. Break-Even
- Day 1 Collection: According to a PTI report, the film collected an estimated Rs 9.45 crore (Net) on its opening day. This is a decent, but not extraordinary, start.
- The Weekend Jump: The film needs very strong jumps on Saturday and Sunday. It has to maintain a high level of collections during the weekdays too. The big break-even target of Rs 290 crore (Net) is a long race. Good word-of-mouth is very important for this film now.
Opinion
De De Pyaar De 2 has a high mountain to climb. The estimated budget of Rs 130 crore makes the break-even point very tough. The initial opening of Rs 9.45 crore is a good start, but it is not enough to guarantee success alone. The film has to perform strongly for many weeks. The positive reviews from some sections of the audience must translate into strong footfall in the coming days. The pressure is high. The family audience’s love for this sequel will decide if Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh can cross the finish line into profit.
