Bhooth Bangla New Release Date and Paid Preview Details: Is Akshay Kumar playing it safe?
Bhooth Bangla Postponed to April 17 as Dhurandhar 2 dominates: Akshay Kumar Paid Previews start April 16
Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan just made a massive move with Bhooth Bangla. Is it a retreat or a masterstroke to survive the Ranveer Singh wave?
Mumbai, Thursday, April 2. Look, if you think Akshay Kumar is just backing away from a fight, you are missing the bigger picture.
The news is officially out, and Bhooth Bangla has shifted its arrival by a week. We were all set for an April 10 opening, but the makers have decided that April 17 is the magic number. Why the sudden cold feet? Well, it is not cold feet; it is a cold-blooded business move.
The elephant in the room is Ranveer Singh. His film Dhurandhar: The Revenge is currently behaving like a runaway train that refuses to slow down.
When a movie is sitting on a global haul of over ₹1,466 crore in just 15 days, you do not just walk into the theater and ask for half the screens.
You wait. You watch. And then, you strike when the timing is perfect.
The Paid Preview Gamble: Copying the Winners
This is where it gets interesting for us box office junkies.
Instead of a standard Friday release, Akshay and Ektaa Kapoor are taking a page out of the Stree 2 and Dhurandhar 2 playbook. They are starting paid previews on Thursday, April 16, from 9 PM onwards.
Think about it. This is exactly how Dhurandhar 2 managed to bag ₹43 crore before its official day one even started.
By starting late on Thursday, the team is looking to generate a massive wave of word-of-mouth.
If the audience loves the first few shows in Mangalpur—the fictional, haunted town where the movie is set—the Friday numbers will explode.
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the industry believes this is the only way to ensure Bhooth Bangla gets the solo attention it deserves without being swallowed by the Dhurandhar wave.
A Monopoly in the Multiplex?
But let us look at the industry reality for a second. Are we moving toward a trend where one movie is allowed to own the entire month?
The makers of Dhurandhar 2 have reportedly been asking for a six-week monopoly in certain circuits.
This puts every other producer in a tough spot. Is it fair for the audience?
Or are we just seeing the birth of a new “event cinema” era where only one giant can stand in the arena at a time? It makes you wonder if the traditional clash of titans is officially dead in Bollywood.
The timeline of this delay has been a rollercoaster. Bhooth Bangla was first looking at an April 2 release, then moved to May, then preponed to April 10, and now finally lands on April 17. The pressure is immense.
This is the first time Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan have worked together since Khatta Meetha in 2010. That is a 14-year gap, boss!
They have the “OG” comedy gang too—Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, and Asrani. You cannot afford to waste a lineup like that on a weekend when everyone is still busy watching Ranveer Singh play a spy in Karachi.
The Legend of Vadhusur Awaits
The story itself sounds like a wild ride. We are talking about a haunted palace and a mysterious curse tied to the legend of Vadhusur.
Apparently, this curse stops weddings from happening in the town. Imagine the comedy potential when you throw Rajpal Yadav and Akshay Kumar into that mess!
As per the latest updates shared on Ekta Kapoor’s Instagram, the decision to move was made after intense discussions with exhibitors. They want to ensure that both Dhurandhar 2 can finish its historic run and Bhooth Bangla can start its journey with a full house.
Dhurandhar 2 is currently eyeing the lifetime record of Baahubali 2, which means theaters are going to be packed for a while.
The trailer is now expected to drop on April 6. That will be the real test. If that trailer hits the mark, the one-week delay will be forgotten. If not, the pressure on those April 16 paid previews will be through the roof.
In my view, this is the smartest move Akshay has made in a long time.
There is no point in ego-clashing with a movie that is breaking Baahubali records. By moving to April 17 and using the paid preview strategy, he is giving the film a chance to breathe.
The horror-comedy genre is currently the “darling” of the Indian box office.
If Priyadarshan has captured even half the magic of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, we are looking at a potential blockbuster.
Sometimes, taking one step back is just the preparation you need to take a massive leap forward.
