Lord Bobby breaks the mold! Bobby Deol & Anurag Kashyap’s Bandar Release Date
From Animal to Bandar: Why Bobby Deol kept his shyness aside for Anurag Kashyap’s gritty legal thriller
MUMBAI — Lord Bobby is officially back, and this time, he is stripping away every single inhibition we thought he had! The internet is currently losing its collective mind because the much-awaited collaboration between Bobby Deol and the master of grit, Anurag Kashyap, finally has a countdown.
Bandar (also known as Monkey in a Cage) is coming to a theatre near you on June 5, 2026. This isn’t just another movie; it is a full-blown transformation for an actor who is currently enjoying the peak of his career.
While the world is still reeling from his silent-but-deadly vibe in Animal, Bobby is shifting gears into a world that is raw, uncomfortable, and unapologetically real.
The buzz around Bandar has been building since its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) back in September 2025. It is a massive pivot for Bobby, who plays Samar Mehra, a has-been television star whose fame is rapidly evaporating.
The story takes a dark, claustrophobic turn when Samar is accused of rape by an ex-girlfriend and finds himself trapped in the gears of a corrupt, sluggish legal system.
We are talking about a prison procedural that dives deep into the heart of cancel culture and the terrifying concept of being “guilty until proven innocent.”
The “Shameless” Transformation of Lord Bobby
What makes this project truly special is the mental space Bobby Deol had to enter. In a series of recent media interactions, the actor admitted that this role was completely out of his comfort zone.
Bandar required him to shed the image of the “macho villain” or the “glamorous hero” we’ve seen him play for decades.
In fact, while speaking about his experience working with Kashyap, Bobby revealed that he had to keep his natural shyness aside and approach the performance shamelessly. It’s a bold statement from an actor known for his reserved off-screen persona, but it perfectly explains the raw energy he’s bringing to the character of Samar.
As per reports from The Hollywood Reporter India, the film’s release was strategically moved from its original May 22 slot to avoid a crowded window. But here is the kicker: the new date puts it in a direct face-off with a literal monster at the box office.
Bandar will be opening right as Yash’s pan-India spectacle, Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown Ups, hits the screens. We are looking at a classic David vs. Goliath scenario.
On one side, you have the massive, high-budget mass appeal of Yash, and on the other, you have a hard-hitting, performance-driven drama led by a revitalised Bobby Deol.
A Masterclass in Gritty Casting
Anurag Kashyap has always been a wizard when it comes to picking the right faces for his dark universes.
Alongside Bobby, we have a stellar ensemble including Sanya Malhotra, who plays Samar’s sister, Suhani. Her character is reportedly the emotional anchor of the film, dealing with the fallout of her brother’s arrest while questioning the man she thought she knew. Then there is Raj B Shetty and Saba Azad, adding layers to a narrative that refuses to provide easy answers or “filmy” resolutions.
Is the Indian audience, currently obsessed with “mass” action, ready to sit through a gruelling, 140-minute mirror to society?
It is a risky move to release an indie-spirited film like Bandar alongside a juggernaut like Toxic.
Some might argue that the contrast could actually help Bandar stand out as the “thinking person’s” choice. But the real challenge will be whether Bobby’s newfound stardom can pull the crowds into a story that promises to leave them unsettled rather than entertained.

The screenplay, crafted by the powerhouse duo Sudip Sharma and Abhishek Banerjee (the brains behind Paatal Lok and Udta Punjab), ensures that the world of Bandar is authentic.
From the unhygienic conditions of Indian prisons to the brutal reality of how society labels an accused person, the film doesn’t pull any punches. For Bobby Deol, this is more than just a movie—it’s a statement. He is proving that he isn’t just back for the “vibe”; he’s back to act. June 5 cannot come soon enough!
