Karuppu Box Office Collection Day 8: Fantasy Drama Nears 200 Crore Mark, PPAWD Collapses
MUMBAI — The second Friday numbers are finally in, and the box office landscape has completely split into two different directions.
After a highly contested first week, Suriya’s mythological mass entertainer Karuppu has maintained a steady hold, while Ayushmann Khurrana’s comedy sequel Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is struggling to stay afloat. Based on our latest trade data, Karuppu registered ₹7.65 crore net on Day 8, keeping its momentum alive.
In stark contrast, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do crashed to a mere ₹1.40 crore net, signalling a massive theatrical rejection.
Why the Opening Weekend Hype Was Not Enough
When two films clash, the first-week hold is always the ultimate litmus test for any theatrical run.
Karuppu is mounted on a heavy budget of ₹130 crore and had the daunting task of sustaining audience interest beyond the South Indian strongholds.
Directed by RJ Balaji, the film’s blend of courtroom drama and mythological elements has clearly struck a chord. The Day 8 drop was a nominal 5% from Thursday, putting its total India net collection at an impressive ₹119.01 crore. It has now recovered 92% of its budget natively.
On the flip side, Mudassar Aziz’s Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is facing a nightmare scenario.
Despite being part of an established franchise that previously saw massive success, this sequel has failed to capture the magic.
Made on a controlled budget of ₹60 crore, the Ayushmann Khurrana, Rakul Preet Singh, and Sara Ali Khan starrer has only managed to pull in a total India net of ₹30.65 crore so far. The 31% decline on Day 8 confirms that the urban multiplex crowd has largely rejected the love triangle comedy.
The Reality Check on Audience Fatigue
Are we seeing the limits of franchise fatigue, or is the audience just demanding better content?
Pati Patni Aur Woh Do opened with low occupancy and never truly recovered, proving that a recognisable brand name is no longer enough to guarantee footfalls.
Conversely, Karuppu survived a chaotic release window—including last-minute show cancellations on its intended opening day—to emerge as Suriya’s biggest grosser in recent years. The audience is clearly willing to show up for high-stakes, event-level cinema, even when the critical reviews are completely mixed.
Karuppu Day 8 Breakdown: The Math Behind the Run
Let us look at the exact day-wise trajectory for both films to understand where the momentum shifted.
For Karuppu, the numbers show a film that maximised its Sunday peak and stabilised effectively.
Karuppu
Answer: 3,967,000 Tubs!
Pati Patni Aur Woh Do simply lacked the legs to survive the crucial weekday test.
Pati Patni Aur Woh Do
Answer: 1,021,667 Tubs!
Karuppu is banking heavily on its Tamil Nadu core, having recently crossed the ₹100 crore gross mark in the state alone. Meanwhile, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is crawling toward the ₹45 crore worldwide mark, a far cry from the ₹109 crore lifetime of its 2019 predecessor.
BoxOfficeWala Verdict on Lifetime Prospects
Let us be brutally honest here.
Karuppu is heading straight toward the hit zone. With a worldwide gross already touching ₹197.81 crore, the film will easily cross the ₹200 crore milestone this weekend.
The overseas contribution of ₹57.4 crore has acted as a massive buffer, ensuring the distributors are in the green.
Expect the lifetime India net to wrap up around the ₹145 to ₹150 crore range.
For Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, the theatrical run is practically over.
Recovering only 51% of its budget by Day 8 means the film will rely heavily on its satellite and digital rights to break even. The lifetime domestic net will struggle to cross ₹40 crore, making it a clear theatrical flop.
