Drishyam 3 OTT Release Date: Why Fans Should Not Wait for Streaming
Drishyam 3 is finally out. And Georgekutty has done it again.
The Malayalam thriller hit theatres on May 21, and the numbers are impressive. We are talking about a worldwide gross of over Rs 117 crore in just three days.
Fans are packing the cinemas, the interval block is trending all over social media, and the suspense is exactly what we hoped for. But while half the internet is currently dodging spoilers, the other half is asking one very specific question. When is Drishyam 3 coming to streaming?
The May 21 Pivot: Geopolitics and Birthdays
This third chapter had an incredible amount riding on it. Director Jeethu Joseph and Mohanlal initially planned to release the movie on April 2.
The makers then pulled a massive shift, moving the theatrical release to May 21 to perfectly coincide with Mohanlal’s birthday. It was a masterstroke in marketing that turned a regular premiere into a massive fan celebration.
Mohanlal himself attended the first-day first-show and was visibly emotional, later posting a heartfelt note thanking fans for treating Georgekutty’s family as their own.
The hype translated instantly at the ticket counters. Before the first show even began, advance bookings crossed Rs 28 crore worldwide, with over three lakh ticket interests registered online.
The Malayalam version naturally dominated the initial earnings, but the dubbed Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada versions have also expanded the franchise’s footprint drastically across the country. In Kerala alone, the opening day saw over two lakh tickets sold before the theatre doors even opened.
Amazon’s Courtroom Grip on Georgekutty
There was genuine confusion recently about who actually owns the post-theatrical rights. Multiple platforms were heavily rumoured to be in a bidding war. That noise was shut down completely just a few days ago.
Amazon Prime Video is the sole and exclusive owner of the digital rights for Drishyam 3. They actually released a formal legal notice to clear the air, confirming their iron grip on all formats, including subscription and transactional video-on-demand.
Since the first two parts are already streaming on Prime Video, it makes perfect sense that Aashirvad Cinemas extended its longstanding partnership. The notice ensures no other platform can claim a piece of the pie once the theatrical run officially concludes.
The 30 to 35 Day Streaming Window
Now for the exact timeline. South Indian cinema usually follows a strict digital release window to protect theatrical revenue. Early reports from ETimes confirm that Drishyam 3 is operating on a 30 to 35-day theatrical exclusivity window.
If this schedule holds true, the movie will transition from theatres to Amazon Prime Video by late June or the very first week of July 2026. This timeline gives the film four solid weeks to completely dominate the box office before dropping online.
Fans waiting for the Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions on mobile screens will likely see a simultaneous multi-language drop, just exactly like the theatrical release.
Here is where the situation gets interesting.
A movie making Rs 117 crore worldwide in its opening weekend has serious legs. After pulling in over Rs 15 crore net in India on day one, the movie saw a massive 24 per cent jump in domestic collections on day three. This proves that word-of-mouth is doing the heavy lifting.
While audiences are heavily praising the explosive interval block and Mohanlal’s controlled performance, critics have been slightly more divided.
While watching, I felt a heavily character-driven and slower first half, building tension slowly before the massive interval twist. Meena is also drawing heavy praise for perfectly returning to her emotional role. However, a few critics seriously questioned if a third part was strictly necessary after the perfect closure of the second film.
But the fans simply do not care about critical pacing issues. The evening and night shows are running at over 70 per cent occupancy in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
If these numbers hold steady into the second and third weeks, do not be surprised if the makers decide to push the OTT release back by an extra week to maximize those offline ticket sales.
The Franchise Fatigue Factor
The reality is that the franchise might be stretching its absolute limits. Jeethu Joseph previously stated he had the climax written long ago, but making a third part just for the sake of money was never the plan.
Yet, when you watch Drishyam 3, you can physically feel the pressure of maintaining a mega-franchise. The tension is definitely there.
The emotional payoff totally lands. But you have to ask yourself if Georgekutty’s story is finally over, or if the studio is intentionally leaving the door cracked open just enough for another impossible crime.
A box office monster usually demands a sequel, but diluting the story just to keep the money flowing would be a massive mistake.
