Dacoit Budget Breakdown: Sesh, Mrunal, and the ₹80 Crore Gamble!
Dacoit Budget and Salary Breakdown: How Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur Balanced a ₹100 Crore Production
Hey everyone! Nitesh here, and the man who redefined the spy thriller and the biopic genre, Adivi Sesh, is finally back on the big screen after a massive gap since Major. And this time, he is not alone. He has brought along the sensation Mrunal Thakur and the legendary Anurag Kashyap for a raw, dusty, and bloody ride titled Dacoit: A Love Story.
But wait, before we talk about the gunfights and the intense romance, let us talk about the real hero or villain of every film: the money. There has been a lot of chatter in the industry corridors about how a film of this scale was managed.
People are asking, where did those crores go?
Is it all on the screen, or did the stars walk away with the lion’s share?
Today, I am pulling back the curtain on the budget of Dacoit to show you exactly how the math works in this high-stakes bilingual gamble.
The film hit the theatres on 10 April 2026, and the curiosity is at an all-time high.
Why?
Because Adivi Sesh is known for being the king of mid-budget blockbusters. He knows how to make a ₹30 crore film look like a ₹100 crore spectacle. But with Dacoit, the stakes have officially doubled.
We are looking at a project that has reportedly touched a budget of nearly ₹80 crore to ₹100 crore. That is a huge jump for Sesh, and today, we are going to see if every rupee was worth it.
The Massive Scale of a Bilingual Production
First things first, you have to understand that Dacoit is not just a dubbed film. It was shot simultaneously in both Telugu and Hindi.
When you shoot a movie twice, you are essentially paying for double the time on set, double the lights, and sometimes even different supporting actors for specific markets.
This is where a massive chunk of the production budget was burned. According to reports from Zee News, the core production cost is estimated at around ₹70 crore, but when you add marketing and those slick pan-India promotions, the number easily crosses the ₹80 crore mark.
The film was shot across some very rugged and beautiful locations to give it that neo-western vibe.
If you have seen the trailer, you know it does not look like your typical studio-shot drama. The cinematography by Shaneil Deo, who also directed the film, is top-notch.
Investing in high-quality camera work and real locations instead of cheap CGI is where the makers decided to put their faith. It shows that the producers, including Annapurna Studios and Suniel Narang, were not in the mood to cut corners when it came to the visual experience.
The Star Salaries: Who Took Home the Big Checks?
Now, let us get to the part you all came for: the paychecks. In an industry where stars often demand 50% of the budget, Dacoit seems to have followed a more disciplined path.
Adivi Sesh, who is also the writer of the film, has always been vocal about keeping production costs lean.
During the promotions, he mentioned that he does not believe in having a massive entourage or ten different caravans on set. This disciplined approach saved the producers a lot of “fluff” money, but Sesh himself is now a brand. After back-to-back hits, his market value has skyrocketed.
While the exact figure is protected by contracts, industry insiders suggest he has moved into the double-digit territory, likely commanding between ₹12 crore and ₹15 crore, given his dual role as lead actor and writer.
Then we have Mrunal Thakur. She is currently one of the most sought-after actresses across both Mumbai and Hyderabad. After her brilliant run with Sita Ramam and Hi Nanna, she has become a lucky charm for producers.
According to a report by the Deccan Chronicle, Mrunal was signed for Dacoit for a handsome fee of approximately ₹2.5 crore. This is a very smart investment because she brings a massive fan following from both the North and the South, making the “pan-India” tag actually mean something.
And we cannot forget the antagonist! Bringing Anurag Kashyap on board as D Rambabu was a masterstroke.
While Kashyap is primarily a director, his acting stints always carry a certain grit. For a pivotal role like this, a character actor of his stature usually charges anywhere between ₹1.5 crore and ₹2 crore.
When you add the fees for veteran Prakash Raj and Atul Kulkarni, the total cast salary probably sits around the ₹22 crore to ₹25 crore mark. That leaves a healthy ₹50 crore plus just for the making of the film, which is why the action sequences look so sharp!
The Marketing Blitz and the Reality of the Clash
You might be wondering, if the movie is so good, why is everyone talking about the budget?
Well, it is because of the competition. Dacoit has landed right in the middle of a storm.
Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar 2 is still running like a beast in its fourth week, having already crossed the ₹1600 crore mark worldwide. To stand a chance against a monster like that, the makers of Dacoit had to spend heavily on marketing.
They did grand music launches in Hyderabad and Mumbai, and the trailers were pushed aggressively across digital platforms. This marketing spend is estimated to be around ₹10 crore to ₹15 crore. The goal was to ensure that even with a giant like Dhurandhar 2 in theatres, the audience knows that a raw, emotional love story is also available. But here is the thing: was it enough?
The opening day numbers came in at around ₹6.5 crore net in India, which is steady but not record-breaking.
The real question is, can a ₹80-100 crore film survive on “steady” numbers?
In my view, the film is relying heavily on the Telugu market, where Sesh has a loyal fanbase. The Hindi version has had a slower start, which is a bit of a worry. If the movie does not see a big jump on Sunday and Monday, the recovery might become a bit of a mountain to climb. The mixed-to-positive reviews suggest that word of mouth is growing, but is it growing fast enough?
Is This a Win for Adivi Sesh?
Looking at the numbers and the quality of the product, I have to say that Dacoit is a brave attempt.
Adivi Sesh has once again proven that he is the smartest player in the mid-budget game. By keeping his own lifestyle on set simple, he ensured that the ₹80 crore actually went into the lens and the locations rather than into fancy vanity vans.
This is exactly what the Indian film industry needs right now—more money on the screen and less on the ego.
However, the timing of the release is the only “bad news” here.
Clashing with the tail-end of a historic blockbuster like Dhurandhar 2 was always going to be risky. I think Dacoit will eventually find its audience, especially on OTT later, but for the theatrical run, it needs to hold its ground firmly this week.
Fans of raw action and intense romance should definitely give this a look because the chemistry between Sesh and Mrunal is absolutely electric.
