Sunny Deol Faces First Major Setback Post Gadar 2 Hysteria: What Batwara 1947’s Failure Means For His Comeback
Sunny Deol’s Post-Gadar 2 winning streak has hit its first major hurdle with the disappointing box office performance of Batwara 1947.
Released on August 14 alongside Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2, the Rajkumar Santoshi-directed Partition drama struggled to maintain theatrical momentum despite the Independence Day holiday boost, collecting around ₹32 crore net in India over six days.
Following a historic run with Gadar 2 in 2023, the success of Jaat in 2025, and the massive success of Border 2, expectations were high for Deol’s collaboration with Santoshi and producer Aamir Khan.
However, steep weekday declines and mixed word-of-mouth reveal that holiday crowds could not sustain the film.
Exhibitors have begun shifting screens toward Awarapan 2, which quickly crossed ₹100 crore, further pressuring Batwara 1947’s single-screen showcasing.
While this partition drama underscores that post-Gadar 2 hysteria alone cannot guarantee success, it represents a minor bump rather than a complete halt to Deol’s comeback story.
Deol’s future choices will be closely watched to see if he can regain mass-market appeal with upcoming projects like Ramayana Part 1 and Gabru.
