Kantara Box Office Phenomenon
‘Kantara Chapter 1’ is a prequel. It tells the story before the first ‘Kantara’ movie, which was a big hit in 2022. The new film explores the origins of the Daiva Kola (spirit worship) tradition. It is set during the Kadamba dynasty era. This deep dive into Tulu culture and folklore has connected with people everywhere.
The movie has broken many records since its release on October 2, 2025. It opened with a bang, earning a huge amount on the first day. It has been a strong competitor for other big films released this year. The success is important for the Kannada film industry, also known as Sandalwood.
Nearing the Biggest Record of 2025
The film is now very close to beating the collection of the current highest-grossing Indian film of 2025, which is Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Chhaava’ (reported to have collected around ₹601.54 Crore net). Crossing the ₹600 Crore mark is expected to happen very soon, maybe today itself. This would make ‘Kantara Chapter 1’ the biggest net grosser of the year in India.
The director and lead actor, Rishab Shetty, has been praised widely for his performance and his vision. Critics and big industry stars have called the film a cinematic masterpiece. The strong visuals and powerful background music by B. Ajaneesh Loknath are key reasons for the movie’s success.
The film’s makers, Hombale Films, have announced that the movie will be available for streaming online on October 31, but only in South Indian languages for now. The success in the theatres, even with the news of an upcoming OTT release, is truly a huge achievement.
