Vishnu Vinyasam vs Thaai Kizhavi 7-Day Box Office Battle: March Most Surprising Winner Emerges
The first week of March 2026 has delivered a loud and clear message to the film industry: content and cost control are the ultimate kings. As of today, Friday, 06 March 2026, the trade reports from Chennai and Hyderabad show a massive divide in the fortunes of our latest releases. Thaai Kizhavi has emerged as the undisputed champion of the week, raking in a worldwide gross of ₹32.9 Cr on a tiny ₹12 Cr budget, making it a certified super-hit.
On the other side of the fence, the Telugu entertainer Vishnu Vinyasam is gasping for air, having recovered only about half of its ₹20 Cr budget with a worldwide total of ₹15.03 Cr. Meanwhile, the Punjabi comedy Viyaah Kartaare Da is playing its own steady game in the North, earning ₹3.89 Cr globally, though it still has a long hill to climb to reach its ₹12 Cr break-even point.
The industry is currently dissecting why Sree Vishnu, often called the “King of Entertainment,” failed to pull the same magic that worked for him in his previous hit, Single. While he shines in individual comedy blocks involving astrology and Vaastu, the weak screenplay of Vishnu Vinyasam has left the family audience in Andhra and Telangana feeling a bit cheated. Contrast this with Radikaa Sarathkumar’s “Lady Kamal” avatar in Thaai Kizhavi. The film is being celebrated in the B and C centers of Tamil Nadu not just for its humor, but for its raw, rooted storytelling about female independence. Even with a massive collaboration between Humble Motion Pictures and Dharma Productions, the Punjabi entry Viyaah Kartaare Da is finding it hard to scale up beyond its regional stronghold, despite glowing reviews for Gippy Grewal’s comic timing.
Are we becoming too obsessed with “concept” movies while forgetting that a movie needs a solid soul? We see Sree Vishnu trying to make us laugh with social media trends and Instagram reels style acting, but the audience isn’t biting. Maybe the viewers are tired of seeing the same “quirky protagonist” template every six months. Or perhaps, the massive success of a veteran like Radikaa proves that the audience is actually craving high-stakes emotional drama masked as comedy, rather than just loud gags.
Can a movie really survive today just because its lead actor is “likable,” or is the script the only thing that matters anymore?

Let’s dive into the cold, hard numbers provided by BoxOfficeWala tracking. Thaai Kizhavi started its journey on February 27 with a decent ₹2.65 Cr net in India. The real fire started on Saturday and Sunday where it jumped by 81% and 24% respectively, ending the weekend with a huge ₹13.46 Cr. Even though it saw a 60% drop on Monday, it held surprisingly firm throughout the week, finishing Day 7 with ₹1.6 Cr. Its total India Net of ₹22.56 Cr against a budget of ₹12 Cr makes it one of the most profitable films of the year so far.
In comparison, Vishnu Vinyasam opened at ₹2 Cr but never saw that massive “hit” jump. Its best day was Saturday with ₹2.5 Cr, but then the Monday test became a nightmare. It crashed by nearly 57%, falling to ₹1.05 Cr. By the time Thursday arrived, the collections had dwindled to ₹0.6 Cr. With an India Net of only ₹10.45 Cr and a budget of ₹20 Cr, the distributors are looking at a potential loss unless the second weekend shows a miracle.
The Punjabi contender, Viyaah Kartaare Da, is an interesting case. It opened low at ₹0.52 Cr but showed a 73% jump on Tuesday, which was a holiday in the North. It has collected ₹3.32 Cr net in India over seven days. While the numbers look small, the overseas market usually carries Punjabi films, but for this specific title, the overseas data is currently unavailable, leaving its worldwide gross at ₹3.89 Cr.
Looking forward, the screens for Vishnu Vinyasam are already being reduced to make way for new releases like Mrithyunjay. Thaai Kizhavi, however, is expected to maintain a steady run in the Tamil heartland for at least another two weeks. It has already secured its profit and is now just adding cream on top for the producers. For Viyaah Kartaare Da, the path to recovery is through the second weekend; if the family crowds in Delhi and Punjab keep the occupancy above 15%, it might just save its face.
This week’s report is a reality check for star-driven comedies. Thaai Kizhavi is the clear winner because it respected its budget and knew exactly who its audience was. Vishnu Vinyasam is a classic case of an actor being bigger than the script, which almost always leads to a box office stumble. It is bad news for the Telugu trade but a huge win for Kollywood’s experimental storytelling.
My Take
Question For You: Do you think Sree Vishnu should stop doing these “superstition-based” comedies and return to serious thrillers, or was this just a one-off failure?
