September 16, 2025: The box office journey of Sivakarthikeyan’s latest film, “Madharasi,” is proving to be a rollercoaster ride. The movie, which had a very strong opening, is now seeing a big drop in collections.

According to early reports, on its 12th day in theatres, “Madharasi” has only managed to collect around Rs 1 crore. This shows a big slowdown compared to its initial run and raises questions about its final box office numbers.

The film, directed by the well-known filmmaker A.R. Murugadoss, was released on September 5. It had a fantastic first weekend, bringing in a lot of money. The opening day was a massive success, with the film earning Rs 13.65 crore.

This was one of the best opening days in Sivakarthikeyan’s career. The momentum continued over the next two days, with collections of Rs 12.10 crore on Saturday and Rs 11.40 crore on Sunday.

In just three days, the film had already made more than Rs 37 crore. Everyone thought the film would be a huge hit.

But the real test for any movie is how it performs during the weekdays. For “Madharasi,” the weekdays brought a sharp fall. On its first Monday, the collection dropped heavily to Rs 4.15 crore.

The decline continued on Tuesday, with the film making just Rs 3.20 crore, and on Wednesday, it earned only Rs 2.50 crore. By the end of its first week, “Madharasi” had collected about Rs 49 crore.

This sharp drop in numbers is a big worry for the film’s makers. The second week has been even tougher.

Sivakarthikeyan’s own previous blockbuster, “Amaran,” had a much better run. The film was a huge success.

In its first five days, “Amaran” had already collected a massive amount. It was doing double the business of “Madharasi” in the same time frame. This shows that “Amaran” had a much stronger hold on the audience after its opening.

“Madharasi” could not create the same positive word-of-mouth that would have kept the collections high.

Another example is superstar Rajinikanth’s film “Coolie.” This movie was a huge craze. “Coolie” collected an incredible amount in its first few days. By the ninth day of its release, “Coolie” had made Rs 469 crore.

In comparison, “Madharasi’s” total collection is just a small fraction of that. While it is not fair to compare a Sivakarthikeyan film with a Rajinikanth film, the numbers highlight the gap in audience pull.

Even a film like “Baaghi 4,” which was a Bollywood movie released at the same time, was at one point performing better on weekdays than “Madharasi.” While “Madharasi” was the overall winner in the first week, “Baaghi 4” showed more consistency in its day-to-day numbers. This shows that “Madharasi” lost its audience faster than some other movies.

What could be the reasons for this sharp decline?

The film received mixed reviews from both critics and regular moviegoers. While Sivakarthikeyan’s new action hero image was appreciated, some found the second half of the movie to be slow.

The story and screenplay did not get very strong praise. This seems to have affected the film’s long-term performance.

A movie’s business depends on two things: the opening buzz and good word-of-mouth.

“Madharasi” had the first part right, with a great opening weekend. But it failed in the second part. The collections dropping so low on Day 12 means that new audiences are not coming to the theatres. The movie has mostly been watched by the fans of the lead actor. It has not been able to attract a wider audience.

The makers of “Madharasi” had high hopes. The film was made with a big budget of Rs 180 crore.

For now, the film’s performance is a case study of how a strong opening does not always guarantee a long and successful run at the box office.
