The Kerala Story 2 First Week Box Office Report: Will Controversy Save the Budget or Sink the Sequel?
Inside the First Week: What The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond’s Seven-Day Numbers Reveal About Audience Demand
The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond has finished its first week at the box office with mixed results that tell a very specific story about current Indian audience demand. Released on 27 February 2026, the film faced a rocky start due to legal hurdles but eventually managed to find some footing.
As of today, Friday, 06 March 2026, the trade report coming in from Mumbai and Delhi-NCR suggests that while the film hasn’t touched the heights of its predecessor, it is putting up a fight. The total India Net collection stands at ₹22.84 Cr, with a Worldwide Gross reaching ₹26.94 Cr against a budget of ₹30 Cr. The first seven days have seen a roller-coaster of percentage changes, from a massive 326% jump on Saturday to a worrying 41% drop on Monday, only to be saved by a Holi holiday boost on Tuesday.

Kerala Story 2 Box Office: Net Collection Crosses ₹22 Cr as Holi Holiday Provides Lifeline
The film opened on a Friday that felt more like a whisper than a roar. Due to an interim stay by the Kerala High Court that was only lifted at the last minute, Day 1 saw a meager India Net of ₹1.1 Cr. Many theaters across India remained empty during the morning shows because of the confusion surrounding the release.
However, once the news spread that the film was indeed playing, Saturday saw an explosive jump of 326.36%, raking in ₹4.69 Cr. This proved that the brand name still carries weight, even if the director has changed from Sudipto Sen to Kamakhya Narayan Singh.

The “Monday Test” is usually where the wheat is separated from the chaff. For Kerala Story 2, Monday was a cold shower. The collections dropped by 41.11% to ₹2.65 Cr. In the trade world, a drop of more than 40% on the first Monday is often seen as a sign of weakening legs. The audience mood seems divided. On one hand, you have people on platforms like BookMyShow giving it a high rating of 9.3/10 based on nearly 10,000 votes, praising the “Super Direction” and “Great Acting”. On the other hand, critics and social media discussions on Reddit and Twitter are labeling it “louder” and “more alarmist” than the first part.
A very interesting thing happened on Tuesday.
Usually, Tuesday is just another weekday, but March 3rd was a Holi holiday in several parts of India. This gave the film a much-needed shot of adrenaline. The collection jumped by 45.28% to ₹3.85 Cr. This boost is essentially what kept the film alive and prevented it from crashing completely before the first week ended. Without this holiday, the story today might have been about a total washout.

The performance has been best in the Hindi heartland, particularly in cities like Mumbai and Delhi, where occupancy rates were slightly higher compared to the south. In Mumbai, major multiplexes like PVR and INOX saw decent evening show occupancy on the weekend, but the overall Hindi occupancy on the final day of the week (Thursday) settled at a low 9.62%.
This brings us to a hard truth. Can a film survive on controversy alone in 2026?
The first Kerala Story was a once-in-a-decade lightning strike. It had the shock value. The sequel, while trying to “Go Beyond” by showing stories from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, feels like it’s screaming into a microphone that’s already been heard. Are the audiences getting “outrage fatigue”? Or is it simply that the lack of a strong cinematic plot, as pointed out by several reviews, is finally catching up with the genre?
The first installment had collected a massive ₹81.4 Cr in its first week. This sequel hasn’t even crossed the ₹30 Cr budget mark in the same period. While it’s not a “disaster” yet—considering it is close to its production cost—it is certainly a massive step down. The film now needs a very strong second weekend to reach a “hit” verdict.
In my experience, these types of films rely heavily on “organic” word-of-mouth rather than paid reviews. The Saturday jump was a great sign, but the sharp drop on Monday and Thursday indicates that the initial curiosity is fading fast. It’s a steady hold for now, but not a blockbuster run. The makers might recover their costs, but the brand has definitely lost some of its box office magic.
