Matka King Season 2 Confirmed: Prime Video Renews Vijay Varma Series
Mumbai — Prime Video officially renewed Matka King for Season 2 today, May 7, following the massive global success of Vijay Varma’s 1960s crime thriller that premiered just three weeks ago. The king returns.
This renewal is a huge win for the OTT giant.
Season 1, which dropped on April 17, 2026, became the most-watched new scripted series on Prime Video in two years. It trended in the Top 10 across 37 countries within seven days.

For Vijay Varma, this isn’t just a sequel; it is a total takeover. He has firmly transitioned from a niche indie favourite to the undisputed face of Indian digital noir. The show’s impact is already shifting how platforms look at period dramas, proving that gritty, rooted Indian stories have serious global pull.
But here is the real talk.
While the fans are losing their mind on Stan Twitter, critics were actually quite divided.
Some called the first season “strangely bland” despite the high-stakes gambling. They felt it romanticised Brij Bhatti a bit too much without showing the real human wreckage of addiction. So, the big question for Season 2 is simple: Will the makers actually get their hands dirty this time? Or will they stick to the same larger-than-life formula that brought the numbers?
The Mystery of the Director’s Chair
As per the official announcement from Prime Video India, development on the second season is already in full swing.
However, there is a major catch that has the industry whispering. While Vijay Varma and Kritika Kamra are confirmed to reprise their roles as Brij Bhatti and Gulrukh, the streamer has not yet confirmed if the Sairat filmmaker, Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, will return as the director.
Manjule’s signature touch was what gave the first season its atmospheric 1960s Bombay vibe. If he doesn’t return, the “Matka Universe” might face a massive stylistic shift. Insiders reported that the production houses—Roy Kapur Films and Aatpat—are currently in deep talks to finalise the creative team.
Losing Manjule would be a huge blow to the show’s grounded authenticity.
Brij Bhatti’s Empire Goes National
The narrative timeline for Season 2 is expected to pick up right where the first eight episodes left off. We saw Brij Bhatti rise from a humble cotton exchange worker to a man who democratized gambling for the masses. He took an earthen pot and turned it into a symbol of power. But with power comes a massive bullseye.
Season 1 ended with Brij facing pressure from the Underworld and political sharks like Minister Bapat. His family life is also a mess; his wife, Barkha, played by Sai Tamhankar, feels completely alienated by his “dishonest” empire.
The upcoming season will likely focus on Brij trying to legalise his business while his brother Laxman’s betrayal continues to haunt him. It is going to be a messy, high-stakes game of survival.

What Is Next for the Matka King?
The success of the show has officially placed Vijay Varma in the big leagues. With a 7.2/10 IMDb rating and the backing of industry heavyweights like Karan Johar and Aamir Khan, the pressure for the sequel is through the roof.
We are looking at a likely release in early 2027 if production stays on track.
For now, the fandom is just happy that the cards are still on the table. Brij Bhatti is not done yet.
