October 19, 2025: The first few reviews and public reactions to Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s upcoming film, Thamma, have started coming out online.
Thamma movie is one of the most-awaited releases of this festive season. It is a part of the popular Maddock Horror-Comedy Universe. The film is all set for a big theatrical release on Diwali, October 21.
The very early buzz from special screenings suggests a mix of feelings about the film. Some people are calling it a fun and fresh addition to the horror-comedy genre. But others have said it is a bit confusing and not as strong as the earlier movies in the franchise, like Stree.

Thamma – A Story of Blood, Love, and Laughter
Thamma is directed by Aditya Sarpotdar. The movie tells a supernatural love story. Ayushmann Khurrana plays Alok, who is the “last hope of humanity.” Rashmika Mandanna plays Tadaka, a character who is like the “first ray of light.” The film’s story is centered on a world of vampires, known as Betaals.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the main villain, Yakshasan, the powerful vampire king. His dark presence threatens the world and the love story of the main pair. Veteran actor Paresh Rawal also plays a key, and funny, role as Alok’s father.
The trailer showed a good mix of romance, comedy, and horror. It was a complete package. But now, after seeing the full film, the audience has different opinions.
What the Early Reviews Say
Initial social media posts and reports hint at a mixed bag of opinions. Some people praised the acting and the visual look of the film. They felt the visuals were “striking” and the production quality was very high. The movie has a big budget, and it shows on the screen.
Ayushmann Khurrana’s performance as Alok has been appreciated. He is known for playing different types of roles. In Thamma, he tries a new action and supernatural avatar. Rashmika Mandanna also looks good as Tadaka, but some online comments have pointed out issues with her Hindi dialogue delivery.
On the other hand, a few early reports suggest the film is “a royal mess.” Some critics feel the movie focuses too much on glamour and songs. The makers have added special dance numbers featuring Malaika Arora and Nora Fatehi.
Critics feel this focus on “glam quotient” takes away from the main horror-comedy story.
The main concern is that the movie relies too much on its connection to the overall Maddock Horror-Comedy Universe. Some feel it does not have a strong identity of its own. It uses cameos, like Varun Dhawan’s Bhediya, to create excitement instead of new, original storytelling.
Thamma Box Office Excitement Builds Up
Even with the mixed reviews, the excitement for Thamma is very high. The advance booking figures are strong. The film has already crossed the Rs 5 crore mark in gross advance bookings. This shows that the movie has a huge draw for the festival release.
A lot depends now on the ‘word-of-mouth’ after the public release. A good positive response from the general audience can help the film do very well at the box office over the long Diwali weekend.
Thamma is trying to bring a new kind of romantic horror-comedy to Indian screens. Whether this new blend will win the hearts of the audience or not will be clear after October 21. Fans of Ayushmann and Rashmika are waiting with bated breath.
